Who does my husband need to talk to about re-enlistment with a medical issue?
My hubby was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis at the beginning of this year due to excessive PT. He’s gone through all his medical appointments and been ok’d for deployment later this year. He went to fill out some paperwork last week and had to mention the rhabdo and the medic signing off told him that was usually a disqualifier. Seems like nobody can really give him a straight answer-would be nice to know if he can re-enlist or not since most of his last contract year he will be deployed the whole time. Even at med board everyone was sort of iffy with no real answers. Any experiences or suggestions appreciated. I’ve asked this before, with only one answer, that’s why I’m asking again. Thanks.
I also thought if he was fit to deploy he would be fit to re-enlist. We are at an infantry division although he is MI, this may be why he was told it could disqualify him, medic may have assumed he had a more physical job than he actually does (35N).
Tutu…. /palmface
If he has been medically cleared by a DOCTOR to be fit to deploy, then he is fit to re-enlist. He needs to speak to his re-enlistment NCO or Career Counselor. A medic is not a doctor and cannot make those types of comments.
Good Luck.

I don’t know…I don’t know what rhabdo is…If it’s only a medic signing, I’d see someone higher up. (medics = corpsman ??? not a Dr ???)

Chain of Command. Start with his Platoon Sgt, and go from up from there. There will be somebody along the way that will get the right answer.

Something isn’t adding up here. If it’s a dis-qualifier for re-enilstment then they would have sent him to a PEB as soon as he was given the diagnosis because he technically is not fit for duty.
A couple questions.
Is he on a profile?
Is his MEDPROS set to red?
Does his MEDPROS say he’s not deployable?
Is he awaiting a med board?
Unless he’s awaiting a med board or is in a hold status because of a med board outcome (he’s gone to the med board and is waiting for his paperwork to come back or is waiting to go to school for a reclass) the only thing he needs to do is go to the units re-enlistment NCO and tell them that he wants to re-enlist. He doesn’t need to bring up his medical situation unless he is waiting for a P3, waiting for a med board or waiting for the results of a med board and that is because during that time you can NOT re-enlist.

Seriously the medic in the unit is totally not the person to talk to! Some very brilliant medic in my husbands unit told him for the pain he was experiencing to take ibuprofen, But here is the kicker. He had to take it for two weeks before it would start to work. If you have ever read the bottle it has warnings about taking it for that long and that if you need to take it for that length of time for an issue to go to a Dr.
There is a retention officer in his unit. Have him ask around until he is able to locate that person. Once he has that is the man or woman to ask. They are the ones that talk reenlistment, length, bonuses ect. It may be his commander it may be another sr enlisted, all depends on how his unit handles it. That person will do the leg work or tell him how to do the leg work if he is wanting to stay in. But from my experience if he has been cleared for active duty deployment there is nothing to stop him from staying in. If he gets out and wants back in later that may be an issue with lots of red tape to go through.
