Global: should the whole world wipe the slate clean on national debt? -any debt and start again?
During this economic slump many countries are struggling with debt. Not least the UK with alleged ?1.5 Trillion and a budget deficit of ?200 Billion. figures seemingly impossible to comprehend let alone pay back. All countries are suffering with this crippling debt most recently Iceland is holding an referendum on weather it should pay back money it owes the UK due to the collapse of the financial markets. If Iceland does in the end not pay back it debt is this the way forward? As we will all be paying off the mistakes of the last 10 years or so for the next 30 years. This will just put the Global economy back years and the development of most countries especially the poorer ones.
What is wrong if EVERY COUNTRY wipes the slate clean on all debt national and financial (banks). Without going into ethics on this one, I just think trying to pay back this debt is just pure folly and most countries will go bankrupt -Pretty much what Im saying anyway.( Ive asked this question before but ppl seem to take the ethical point of view, I don’t think this counts in these times) but in order for it to work all countries must do it not just one.
if a country will wipe out its debt, its securities will drop in value (its bonds) and it will be a risky country for investors.
That would lead to catastrophic economical outcomes…
for example, if the US Treasury is dropped from AAA to D, then other countries wont trade or buy it.
US, then wont be able to sell its bond easily … i.e it wont be able to take a loan
There are agreements to drop debt. a kind of court.. internternational court. but it isnt so much sophisticated/
There will be a full-court press on countries who will try to behave that way.
sorry, it is not easy to explain over the internet, i hope some things fell into place

Sure, and while were at it, wipe out all personal debt as well.
I can’t wait for it to happen, I will be running to the realtors office and to an exotic car dealership just as fast as I can.

Not going to happen. It sounds good, and would probably work but there is no way to keep ethics out of it. People are greedy.

Pie-in-the-sky pipedream stuff. Sounds like a good idea unless you are holding the note and it’s your money they won’t be paying back. If EVERY COUNTRY does it then it’s a net wash and to no effect anyway.

I think we should wipe the slate clean. It would give many African nations the chance to rid themselves of poverty e.t.c. Western governments always say how poverty is bad and we should all do what we can to help, but they won’t get rid of the very thing keeping poverty around – the debt.
Unfortunately it’ll never happen. Governments are too greedy and selfish to help out someone else.

And the reason anyway would then lend a cent to a government in the future would be . . . ?

i dont think it can work because debt means you owe somebody something, if you wipe away debt, the people that lent the money would be losing out, thus it would create more debt and more chaos
